The project
The project explores the relationship between Caen stone, memory and the historical links between Normandy and Ireland.
The venues
Caen, Normandie
First exhibition — spring 2027. The Church of Vieux Saint-Sauveur, a medieval building in the heart of Caen, will host the exhibition in 2027, creating a dialogue between contemporary art and the history of Caen stone.
Enniscorthy, Wexford
Second exhibition — summer 2027. At Enniscorthy Castle, a 12th-century Anglo-Norman castle, the exhibition ‘Caen Stone & Water’ celebrates Norman heritage, echoing the presence of Caen stone in the neighbouring Saint Aidan’s Cathedral.

The project
Through a series of contemporary works incorporating Caen stone, the project explores the relationship between material, memory and movement.
From Normandy to Ireland, it highlights the historical journeys of Caen stone and the legacy it continues to carry today.
Exhibition venues
Caen, Normandie
The former church of Vieux Saint-Sauveur will host the project’s inaugural exhibition in spring 2027. This medieval building, the oldest parts of which date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, offers a natural dialogue between contemporary art and Caen’s heritage, at the very heart of the history of Caen stone and its spread across Europe.
Enniscorthy, Wexford
The project will be presented at Enniscorthy Castle during the summer of 2027, continuing the dialogue between Normandy and Ireland. Built at the end of the 12th century by the Anglo-Norman lords, Enniscorthy Castle bears witness to a shared heritage that spans the seas. Nearby, St Aidan’s Cathedral houses an altarpiece carved from Caen stone, a reminder of how this material from Normandy has been circulated throughout Europe since the Middle Ages.

The exhibition is organised around four sequences following the journey of Caen stone from its extraction to the legacy it still carries today.

Stone appears in its original state, as material, resource and geological memory.
Crossings
Stone becomes movement, following human, maritime and cultural exchanges.
Strata
Layers reveal the passage of time through stone and landscape.

Heritage continues through contemporary artistic creation
The memory of matter
The project does not seek to illustrate history.
It creates a dialogue between material, light, memory and contemporary creation.
Each work offers a new interpretation of Caen stone and its journeys across territories.
